Wrinkle Treatments with Botoks

Treatments with botulin toxin performed by lek. Aleksandra Strobel-Pytel.

Botulin toxin injections are a very effective treatment to reduce lines and wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines and face. They are our most popular treatment at PRIVÉ Beauty.

Botulin toxin has been under practice for more than 20 years and over 2 million patients are treated in the round the world per year. Botulin toxin is a highly purified protein derived from the bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum. It blocks the nerves to muscles that cause wrinkles & unnecessary expression as well as sweat glands to decrease excessive sweating. Also, in bruxism it is used to relax excessively strong (hypertrophied) muscles. Often referred to as a potent toxin in the media it is used in very low doses that are safe when performed by experienced medical practitioners.

HE FOLLOWING ARE COMMONLY TREATED AREAS WITH BOTOKS

FOREHEAD LINES
The parallel grooves that appear on the forehead from constant contraction of the frontalis muscle and elevation of the eyebrows worsen with age and sun exposure. For certain people, these lines show ‘negative’ emotions of stress, concern and tiredness. Also we find that the primary concern with these lines is that they can age the facial appearance.

Whilst many may desire the complete absence of these lines with botulin toxin, the resultant effect of ‘overtreating’ can create a stony, artificial, shiny forehead with little feature. We have the extensive experience to apply with caution and precision in these cases. We have had many successes in achieving, a softer, smoother and natural look when applying botulin toxin wrinkle relaxing injections in this area.

Please note that pillow / sleep lines are not treated with Botulin toxin.

FROWN LINES
Frowning is often associated with negative emotions such as anger, tiredness, disappointment and frustration. The vertical and horizontal lines that appear when frowning are formed by contraction of a group of muscles. Weakening these depressor muscles can help elevate the brow, soften the lines and create a more positive, relaxed appearance. Indeed, there is some evidence that treating the frown area can elevate mood and may help prevent migraines.

Dynamic frown lines that appear with active contraction respond very well to botulin toxin. However, over time they can form static creases that are visible at rest. We can discuss and then apply methods of treatment in these cases, for example a combination treatment using botulin toxin and dermal filler can provide some great results.

EYE WRINKLES
The creases that radiate from the lateral part of the eye are known as ‘crow’s feet and can be the misery of many women as their make-up aggregates in the depths of the wrinkles. The dynamic lines that appear when smiling, laughing and squinting can be treated effectively and quickly with botulin toxin anti-wrinkle treatments. This area can be particularly prone to bruising and it is advisable to avoid alcohol and anticoagulant medications two weeks before treatment if possible.

EYE WRINKLE TREATMENT OPTIONS
With age and sun damage, deeper lines emerge that are present even without active movement. These static lines may require additional treatments with dermal filler, chemical peel or laser resurfacing balanced with the appropriate amount of Botulin toxin anti-wrinkle injections..

Creases appearing under the eye can age an individual’s appearance, project tiredness and amplify dark circles. Treatment of the lower eyelids is possible in select persons and can improve wrinkling and sometimes widen the eye. It is not recommended for those with reduced skin elasticity or who have had previous lower eyelid surgery or resurfacing. Your cosmetic doctor will be able to provide guidance during your consultation.

EYEBROW LIFT
Eyebrow shape can dramatically alter appearance and a gently arched eyebrow conveys an attractive, youthful, happy and confident individual. This notably relates to females, as the ideal male eyebrow tends to be lower set and less arched. The lateral eyebrow is particularly prone to hooding as we age with loss of elasticity. It can be difficult to apply eye shadow and there may be an expression of tiredness and worry.

BUNNY LINES
Diagonal lines that naturally appear on either side of the nose when squinting or scrunching are called ‚bunny lines’. Many find these little lines cute and rather attractive, however, others dislike the ‚look of disdain’ they can convey. Furthermore, bunny lines may also be the telltale ‘Botulin toxin sign’ when arising due to compensatory movement after the frown area has been treated.

BOTULIN TOXIN BUNNY LINES TREATMENT
Bunny lines can be treated with small doses of botulin toxin on the lateral aspects of the nose. If you are having the frown area treated and appear prone to developing these lines our doctors may recommend also treating this area or reviewing your results at a top-up appointment where any adjustments can be made.

SMOKER’S LIP LINES
Lips are the focal point of the lower face with volume, smoothness and well-defined borders being the epitome of youth and beauty. It is with dismay that we notice how our lips change with age as they lose their contour and become thin and wrinkled. The lines that radiate from the borders deter women from their usual bright lipsticks due to lipstick bleeding. Although often termed ‚smoker’s lines’ they can also be attributed to habitual pursing of the lips, chronological age and photodamage.

There are a variety of treatments adept at smoothing lip lines. Botulin toxin anti-wrinkle injections are best suited to dynamic wrinkles, those that appear whilst pursing lips. For established (static) perioral lines, dermal fillers and resurfacing with chemical peels and lasers are more effective.

GUMMY SMILE
Displaying an excessive amount of upper gum on smiling or laughing can cause incredible anxiety, distress and embarrassment to individuals. It can lead to social behaviours focused on concealing their smile such as covering their mouths or avoiding photographs.

In order to tackle this concern with botulin toxin, the upper lip levator muscles need to identified and injected with small doses of botulin toxin. The result should ‘gently relax’ but not ‘paralyse’ these muscles. This should limit the upward movement of the lip and reduce the amount of tooth and gum exposure when smiling. The upper lip may appear elongated with a flatter groove (philtrum).

BRUXISM / TEMPEROMANDIBULAR JOINT (TMJ) DISORDER OR JAW TENSION
TMJ disorders can cause severe head, jaw and neck pain. The joint is located where the jawbone meets the skull and is essential for talking and eating. If the joint has been overworked or if there is malalignment Botulin toxin can help to relieve this tension in muscles, reducing headaches and pain associated with chewing. It may also minimise jaw lock.

BRUXISM
Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is very common and affects between 5-20% adults. It may occur during the day or night and is often related to stress. The masseter biting muscle is exceptionally strong and can lead to severe dental damage, jaw ache, headaches and neck pain. As the grinding continues, the muscle enlarges, worsening the damage. facial shape alters as the jawline widens with the bulge of the masseter muscle. Dentists often provide night guards which can help to protect the teeth.

Injecting the masseter muscles with botulin toxin causes a partial weakening/relaxation of the muscles and a reduction in size. This reduces the pressure when grinding and greatly improves symptoms. It does not, however, cure the underlying cause of bruxism.

The treatment for jaw muscles usually involves a couple of injections into each masseter muscle. It is a relatively pain-free and quick procedure. The results last approximately 3-6 months and patients are reviewed to assess possible further treatments and maintenance doses.

EXCESSIVE SWEATING: FACIAL, UNDERARM, HAND, FOREHEAD AND FEET BOTULIN TOXIN TREATMENT
Excessive sweating and excessive blushing is cause by hyper signalling of the autonomic nervous system.Hence botulin toxin being a nerve blocker has had good records in treatment of patients with the two.please see individual pages below for further information.

BOTULIN TOXIN SWEATING
Those dissatisfied with the results of the topical treatments may want to seek the help of a dermatologist to discuss Botulin toxin injections. Botulin toxin injections aren’t just for wrinkles, they are incredibly effective at completely shutting down the sweat production in problem areas for up to a year. It is a relatively easy and quick procedure, and the vast majority of patients report being very satisfied with the results. There are also prescription oral medications that can help with reducing sweating, but those carry more side effects and most patients don’t tolerate them very well.

BOTULIN TOXIN HYPERHIDROSIS
Approximately 3% of the population suffers from some form of clinically diagnosed hyperhidrosis. Those with hyperhidrosis perspire in amounts beyond what is required by the body to keep cool. Affected patients also continue to sweat even when temperatures cool. For some, this can have a large impact on their life. Those with hyperhidrosis can suffer from embarrassment and have to continuously change their clothes throughout the day. Many complain that hyperhidrosis is at its worst during the heat of the summer months. In warmer temperatures, patients can be helped by wearing lightweight and breathable fabrics. If visible sweating is a problem, patients should avoid wearing colors that display the moisture more prominently.
